I can feel the excitement rising!

It’s getting to that time of year again! Around Feb last year whilst binge-watching Gardeners World at every opportunity, I stumbled upon cut flowers. This was a whole new world to me and I instantly fell in love. So I started my 2021 growing season in February / March – spring sowing my Hardy Annuals and shortly after my Half Hardy Annuals.

This growing season, I’ve stolen a little bit of a march by sowing some things in Autumn. (Check out my earlier blog post for more info!) This is new to me but what I’m hoping is that it helps fill the little bit of the flower gap that I experienced last year.

One thing I can definitely say is the anticipation of this year’s growing season is in full swing! As I walk around the garden I can see signs of new life popping up through the ground and everywhere I look on Insta everyone is buying ALL the seeds and starting to plan.

Now’s definitely a great time for planning before this year's seed sowing really gets started – whilst we’re just waiting for the light levels to increase a little (although I’m about to venture into the world of heat mats and grow lights but that’s a whole other story!)

So, whilst I am getting the seedbox out and dusting off the graph paper ready to start planning my cut flower beds, I’m also really conscious of the fact that I need to just breathe, relax and enjoy the process. I’m sometimes guilty of getting a little overwhelmed, whether that’s because subconsciously I'm looking at everyone else on Instagram looking all organised and sorted, or because I put pressure on myself to try and get everything perfect.

I can definitely overthink things, and when that happens the overwhelm escalates and I end up not getting a thing done as it feels too big to start. I read something last year that made me smile – Paralysis by Analysis – that could totally be me!!

I’m always going to want things to be perfect, but I’m a lot more understanding of the fact that we’re working with nature here, we can help guide things and nurture them, but ultimately a flower isn’t going to bloom just because it says it’s the right time on my spreadsheet!!

So I’m going to plan my beds (that’s code for try and figure out where I’m going to plant the 1000s of seedlings I intend on having!!) sort out my seed sowing schedule and what garden jobs need doing along the way, then I’m going to relax and enjoy every moment of it!!

Are you new to cut flowers? Come and say hi on Insta and follow my 2022 growing season! I can’t wait!
